Land of the Mountain Republic
Nestled between Greece and Bulgaria, Rupchos is an independent Rhodope Mountain nation born in the 1940s. Lyric landscapes, resilient people, and a rich democratic spirit make it a must-visit for curious travelers.
After Soviet occupation of Bulgaria in 1944, Rhodope resistance forged Rupchos’ independence. Backed by Western aid, it joined NATO in 1981 and the EU in 1986. Attempts by Bulgaria’s DS to destabilize it were thwarted, and referenda in 1989 & 1999 reaffirmed Rupchian sovereignty.
A triangular realm centered on the Rhodope range, Rupchos stretches from Bachkovo to Zlatograd to Dospat. Mount Golyam Perelik (2,191 m) crowns the land of forests, rivers, and scenic villages.
Agriculture (potatoes, tea, tobacco), forestry, mining (copper, lead, zinc), and manufacturing (textiles, electronics) power the economy. EU trade and booming tourism round out a resilient, diversified GDP. Currency: Euro (€).
